Miss Hook of Holland
Arndyk, Holland; early 20th century...
Mr. Hook is celebrating his fifty-eighth birthday as the play opens. He is a wealthy distiller who has made his fortune through his daughter Sally, who invented a famous liqueur "Cream of the Sky". Sally loves Van Vuyt, the bandmaster of a regiment; Van's commanding officer, Capt. Paap, is also in love with Sally.
Paap determines that he must have Sally, and his chance comes when Hook drops the recipe for the famous liqueur. It is picked up by the lazy Slinks, who in turn sells it to Paap. Paap intends to offer his services to help find the missing recipe, and thus gain the favor of Mr. Hook.
Van Vuyt disguises himself and goes to the distillery in the place of Slinks, who had been offered employment. Schnapps, the foreman of the distillery, is in love with Mina (the Hooks' maid). Eventually Van Vuyt succeeds in returning the lost recipe to Hook and in the end everything is cleared up: Paap decides to take Freda, Schnapps is taken over by Mina, and Van and Sally are happily united.
