The Who's Tommy is the tale of a young boy's journey from pain to triumph. During WWII, young RAF Captain Walker parachutes into Germany, is captured and presumed dead.  Back home in London, his pregnant wife gives birth to their son, Tommy, and takes a lover.  The war ends and the missing captain returns to find his wife with her new beau and kills him.  Tommy witnesses the murder in a mirror and is left in a total state of catatonia brought on by the shock of the murder.  His father ends up being acquitted but young Tommy is still too seriously withdrawn to show any emotion at the verdict.

His extended dysfunctional family (uncle, cousins, etc.) misuse and abuse the young deaf, dumb and blind Tommy until it's discovered that he has an uncanny knack for gaming.  He goes on to become an international pinball superstar.  Medical advice, parental affection, even a proposed sexual awakening, fail to remedy the boy's affliction.  Only the breaking of the original mirror finally frees him.

A Chorus Line is a celebration of those unsung heroes of  Musical Theatre - the chorus dancers-- the valiant, over-dedicated, underpaid, and highly trained chorus dancers who back up the stars and often make them look even more talented than they are.

A Chorus Line is also about competition, and competition might easily be the common denominator that grabs the audience and holds it by the collective heartstring until the final choices are made.

Specifically, A Chorus Line takes the audience through the final gruelling audition run by the director, Zach, for a new Broadway musical.  At the beginning of the show, Zach, a driven, compulsive worker, has assembled twenty-six semi-finalists and is putting them through a vigorous series of dance combinations, including ballet and jazz. Soon he whittles this group down to the final seventeen.  They and the audience know that eventually this number will be cut to eight, four boys and four girls.

Instead of having them read a short audition scene, Zach wants to elicit a personal history from each one: how they got into "show business" and why they became dancers.  As he calls upon them individually, they react in every possible way, from bravado to reticence. From childhood on, their memories emerge, blending into a seamless series of musical numbers and monologues.  As their individual stories pour out in songs and in spoken words, we get to know each one of these ambitious entertainers individually, so that by the show's end, we can identify and cheer for our favourites.

A Chorus Line departs from the usual glossy backstage musical by presenting a true picture of what it's like to be in the theatre - glamorous at times, but also tough, heartbreaking and sometimes even tragic.

Our story is set in 1908, and takes place over a two-year span beginning when thirteen-year-old Anne Shirley arrives in Avonlea, Prince Edward Island.  This extremely strong-willed and imaginative young orphan girl arrives in our quiet and stoic little town, on a desperate search of love and family.  Despite much upheaval and growing pains in learning to control her tongue as well as her temper, Anne gradually brings new colour to this town through her energy and vitality, and becomes part of a loving family in return.  This story still resonates today with our innate desire to find our place to belong.

The 1950s are gone and change is in the air!  Hairspray, winner of eight Tony awards including Best Musical, is set in Baltimore in 1962.  Tracy Turnblad, a loveable, plus-size teen, Baltimorean has only one desire, to dance on the popular local TV dance program, The Corny Collins Show.  She has a teenage obsession with one of its dancers Link Larkin and though she is rejected by producer Belma Von Tussle at the auditions, when Tracy shows off some moves at the Sophomore Hop, Corny Collins himself gives her a place on the show.  As she lives her dream, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star.  She can't, however stand the fact that the show won't allow integration and must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin, and integrate a TV network, all without denting her "do"!

Doctor Frederick Frankenstein leaves his fiancé and a prestigious position at a leading medical school behind to sort out an old family estate he has inherited in Transylvania. Upon arrival, he discovers an old laboratory and manuscripts, and attempts to renew his grandfather's infamous legacy by bringing a corpse back to life. With lots of help (and hindrance) from his new partners in crime – estate man servant/general dogsbody Igor, ever eager lab assistant Inga and loyal housekeeper of the Transylvanian castle, Frau Blücher, Freddy tries to continue his experiments while keeping an angry mob of villagers at bay. To his amazement, Frederick's endeavours find success, but also lead to increasingly outrageous situations and decidedly unexpected results!

Fiddler on the Roof, composed by Jerry Bock, with lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and book by Joseph Stein, is set in Tsarist Russia in 1905 and is very closely based on the books Tevye and his Daughters and Tevye the Dairyman by Jewish author Sholem Aleichem.  The story focuses on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his family and Jewish religious traditions while outside influences encroach upon their lives.  He tries hard to cope both with the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters - each one's choice of husband moving farther away from the customs of their faith - and with the edict of the Tsar that will eventually evict his family and all the Jews from their little village of Anatevka.

9 to 5: The Musical is a well-crafted musical comedy version of the popular 1980 movie. It's a tongue-in-cheek contemporary fable that offers a witty take on issues such as office politics, workplace harassment and pay equity – all of which are still relevant today.

When three female co-workers are pushed to the boiling point by their obnoxious boss, they concoct a plan to get even with him. They plan a take-over of their company and learn there's nothing they can't do – even if it is a man's world.

This is a hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex/typewriter era. It's outrageous, thought-provoking, and even a little romantic. It's about teaming up and taking care of business. It's about friendship and finding your voice ... even when you didn't think you had one.

New England 1873, and 15 years later

Billy Bigelow is a carousel barker at a New England amusement park. Julie Jordan, shyest of the local millworkers and Carrie Pipperidge, her best friend, visit the park and ride on the carousel. Carrie is blissfully happy because she is engaged to the worthy Enoch Snow. Julie is strangely attracted to the rough and lonely Billy, and the two are soon married. Shortly after, Billy loses his job, becomes desperate, and bullies his wife, until he learns that he is to become a father. In order to get money to bring up the forthcoming child, Billy is persuaded by Jigger Craigin to take part in a robbery. Their ill-laid plans go awry, and while Jigger escapes, Billy kills himself to avoid capture.

After 15 years in purgatory, Billy learns that he will never get into heaven unless his soul is redeemed. He is given one final chance to return to earth and perform a good deed. At his unhappy daughter's school graduation, Billy manages to whisper words of comfort and hope to her that free her from her ongoing unhappiness.

Every now and then a real gem of a new show comes along that is pure entertainment. The Drowsy Chaperone, a Canadian-born satire of the 1920s musicals, is indeed one of those rare jewels.

It takes place in the mind and in the apartment of a recluse referred to only as Man in Chair. As he plays one of his old records on this antiquated turntable, this delightful show comes to life before our eyes.

Feldzieg Follies and movie star Janet Van de Graaff is saying farewell to showbiz and getting married to oil tycoon Robert Martin. Without her, the Follies stand to lose a lot of money. So the Follies' backers hire two thugs to lean on Feldzieg, their producer, to hlep protect their investment.

The Van de Graaff/Martin wedding is to take place at the estate of a rather ditzy dowager, Mrs. Tottendale. Along with her beleaguered butler, Underling, and in keeping with the era, they provide the scene-melding vaudeville routines.

Feldzieg engages the services of a Latin lothario by the name of Aldolpho who is contracted to bed the bride before her fiancé does and quash any plans for a wedding. Aldolpho enters the bride's boudoir and upon meeting the titled drowsy or should we say tipsy chaperone, immediately mistakes her for the bride.

Add to the mix one gold-digging chorine, a caring best man, an Earhart-like aviatrix along with a few other delightful characters, and there you have it, a wonderful way to escape the dreary horrors of the real world and enjoy life when it was so much less complicated.

She has been called the most famous ship since Noah's Ark...the largest, fastest, most luxurious trans-Atlantic liner of her time...the "unsinkable" ship who, just four days into her maiden voyage, struck an iceberg at 11:40 p.m. on Sunday, April 14, 1912.  Two hours and forty minutes later the "ship of dreams" was gone, taking over 1,500 souls with her into the freezing depths of the North Atlantic.  She is the RMS Titanic, and Orpheus is honoured to mark her 100th anniversary with this exquisite production.

This is not a musical version of the James Cameron movie.  Based on real people and events and over ten years in creation, Titanic - The Musical was launched on April 23, 1997, at Broadway's Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, where it ran for 830 performances and won many accolades - including five Tony Awards - along the way.  Since then, it has been performed throughout North America, the UK and Australia and has been translated for successful productions across Europe and in Japan.

Bringing this now-legendary story to the Orpheus stage has been artistically and technically challenging and has required a huge commitment of time, energy and creativity from everyone involved.  With its elements of privilege and poverty, of courage and cowardice, of great achievement and catastrophic failure, it is a real-life story that, even a century later, far surpasses any screen or script-writer's imagination.

The cast includes Mark, a filmmaker and the narrator of the story; his former girlfriend, Maureen, a performance artist; Maureen's lover, Joanne, a public interest lawyer; Mark's roommate, Roger, a musician; Mimi, an exotic dancer, with whom Roger falls in love; Tom Collins, a computer genius; Collins' lover, Angel, a street musician and drag queen; and Benny, a former member of the group who, after marrying into a wealthy family, has become their landlord. The lead characters are complemented by a strong group of multi-talented ensemble members who play a variety of different characters to round out the production, which is almost completely sung through.

After WW II, Bob Wallace and Phil Davis leave the Army and team up to become a top song-and-dance act. Davis plays matchmaker and introduces Wallace to a pair of beautiful sisters (Betty and Judy) who also have a song-and-dance act. Phil sees that Bob is attracted to Betty, so he talks Bob into following the girls to their next show, at an inn in Vermont. When they get to the inn, it is practically empty because there is no snow, and they discover their former commander, General Waverly, is the lodge owner. They decide to stay to try to drum up some business for the general and a series of romantic mix-ups ensues.

Betty mistakenly thinks that Bob and Phil are taking advantage of the general's misfortune to get free publicity, so she gets angry at them. Judy and Phil think that Betty is upset because she is afraid to fall in love with Bob because she has to look after Judy, so Judy and Phil pretend to get engaged. Betty leaves for New York to get away from Bob. When the general's request to rejoin the army is denied, Bob goes on national TV to get the men from his World War II division to surprise the general on Christmas Eve. Betty sees the show and realizes Bob really is a good guy so she returns to Vermont to participate in the big show. In a memorable finale, Bob and Betty declare their love, as do Phil and Judy. The background of the set is removed to show the snow falling in Pine Tree. Everyone raises a glass, toasting, "May your days be merry and bright; and may all your Christmases be white."

In a small town on the French Riviera, con man Lawrence Jameson has been making a lavish living convincing wealthy women to give him expensive objects and large sums of money. André Thibault, his accomplice, and the local chief of police, informs him that another con artist known as "The Jackal" is rumoured to be in the area.  Freddy Benson, a small-town crook, appears.

At Freddy's insistence, Lawrence takes him under his wing and starts to teach him about the finer things in life.  While in training, Freddy joins Lawrence in his schemes, helping keep marriage-minded women from getting too close.

Freddy soon chafes at the situation and he and Lawrence have a falling-out.  They decided on a contest to see who will move on and who will stay.  The challenge?  The first to con fifty thousand dollars from newly arrived heiress Christine Colgate, the American Soap Opera Queen, will have the town to himself.

The game is on.  Freddy opens; Lawrence counters.  Lawrence advances; Freddy blocks.  It is false identities and convincing lies, ruse and counter-move, with Christine caught in the middle; both men try not only to take her money but also to outwit the other in the process.  As the contest develops, the con men learn that Christine is not wealthy at all, but both have fallen for her and the bet is changed, now becoming a contest to see who can win her favour.

Lawrence, the more experienced swindler, starts to emerge as the apparent winner, but Christine, before leaving town, arranges a tryst with Freddy.  Freddy has won; Lawrence must leave.

An ambivalent Cinderella? A blood-thirsty Little Red Ridinghood? A Prince Charming with a roving eye? A Witch...who raps? They're all among the cockeyed characters in James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim's fractured fairy tale. When a Baker and his Wife learn they've been cursed with childlessness by the Witch next door, they embark on a quest for the special objects required to break the spell, swindling, lying to and stealing from Cinderella, Little Red, Rapunzel and Jack (the one who climbed the beanstalk). Everyone's wish is granted at the end of Act One, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later, with disastrous results.

Set in New York City in 1933 during the Great Depression, Annie is the story of a little girl abandoned as a baby in front of the steps of the Municipal Orphanage with only a silver locket around her neck and a note saying her parents would someday return for her. Having waited for and dreamed of her parents for ten long years while under the strict watch of the mean-tempered Miss Hannigan who runs the Orphanage, Annie finally decides to run away and search for the family she has always wanted. Along the way, she befriends a stray dog who she names Sandy, but before long, Annie is found by the police and returned to the Orphanage to face Miss Hannigan's wrath.

As luck would have it, Annie is brought back to the Orphanage just as Miss Grace Farrell, secretary to the billionaire industrialist Oliver Warbucks, arrives to select an orphan to spend Christmas at the Warbucks mansion. Grace chooses Annie.

Warbucks is so taken with Annie, he decides to adopt her, but before he can approach the little girl about his plans, Annie tells him the story of her locket and her hopes that she might one day find her parents again. Warbucks, wanting nothing more than to make Annie happy, offers $50,000 to anyone who can prove that they are Annie's parents. Learning of the handsome cash reward, Miss Hannigan, assisted by her crooked brother Rooster and his girlfriend Lily, hatches a plot to get the money. The key to their success is their knowledge of Annie's silver locket.
